Philodendron Serpens

Philodendron Serpens

Fuzzy stems, velvet leaves, serious jungle tactility. Philodendron serpens is instantly recognisable for its mossy, hirsute petioles and softly velvety, heart-shaped blades. A natural climber with a refined, architectural look, it matures into broader, more textured foliage that reads lush rather than fussy — the kind of rare houseplant that adds impact without shouting. Give it something to grip and it will repay you. We like to guide this species upright: secure a sturdy moss pole or wooden plank and you’ll see longer internodes and bolder leaf size as it roots into the support. For fundamentals that keep growth steady — from airy substrates to humidity targets — our concise aroid care guide walks through mix, moisture and airflow so your plant thrives rather than merely survives. Light & climate: bright, indirect light is ideal (avoid harsh midday sun that can scorch the velvety surface). Steady warmth between 18–27 °C suits it perfectly. Aim for 60%+ humidity; gentle airflow prevents stagnant pockets and keeps those fuzzy petioles clean and healthy. Water & medium: allow the top 2–3 cm of the potting mix to dry before watering deeply and letting excess drain. Use a chunky, free-draining aroid blend — think bark, coco chips and perlite with a little sphagnum — to keep roots aerated. Fertilise lightly in spring and summer and flush the pot monthly to avoid salt build-up. Avoid waterlogging; the species dislikes sitting wet. Training & styling: start the stake early to encourage an upright, elegant form, or let it scramble for a softer, wild look. Rotate monthly for even light, dust leaves gently to maintain that satin sheen, and prune leggy growth to redirect energy into stronger shoots. Not pet-safe if chewed; keep out of reach of curious companions. Plants will be sent bare root in moss, but those already growing in soil will stay in their pots.
